The Fair Play AVA is particularly unique in that it has the highest average elevation of any appellation in California. This enables it to produce the very best of mountain-grown grapes. The warm days and cool nights, along with high altitudes, combine to create natural acidity and highly-concentrated, complex wines.

Stoney Creek Vineyard is the largest Skinner vineyard with 18 out of 67 total acres dedicated exclusively to Rhône varietals. Situated at an elevation that ranges from 2,300 to 2,740 feet, the vineyard sits on a saddleback ridgeline with various slopes and aspects that can accomodate a wide range of varietals, clones, and rootstalks. The red varietals include Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, and Counoise. The white Rhônes include Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc. The soils are varied but share a common layer of decomposed granite that limits yields, and adds complexity and minerality to the finished wines.
