We at Skinner Vineyards and Winery pride ourselves in the many ecologically friendly features we've incorporated into the design of our new 12,000 square-foot winery.

By working strategically with both the sun and the shade, we’ve been able to significantly reduce our energy use as part of our effort to have as little impact on the surrounding environment as possible.

We began by using 80% recycled steel for the construction of the metal building itself coupled with the highest R-Value insulation available to lay the groundwork for our energy reducing efforts.

We've tapped into solar-power by installing a 55 kW PV Solar System on the roof of our winery to provide the majority of our power needs at full capacity. The building was specifically placed in the orientation that would maximize our solar-power generating potential and we’ve assured that the solar panels line up to give us the largest area for sun exposure possible.

Our barrel rooms have been designed specifically to increase energy efficiency as well. The Night Air Cooling system uses temperature-controlled sensors to automatically pull in the cool outside air of the Sierra Foothills nights and mornings to the barrel rooms rather than relying on electrically generated refrigeration. The barrel rooms are also situated on the northern side of the winery, taking advantage of increased shade and reducing the energy needed to keep our wines at ideal temperatures.

In addition, all of our fermenters are located within the winery itself, rather than being isolated outside. This design reduces our energy consumption significantly and allows us to use much less electricity when keeping the must and wines at stable temperatures in the tanks.

Our landscaping is comprised of native California drought resistant plants and shrubs to minimize water needs. When the plants are irrigated, they are done so with the grey water that is recycled from the winery after use.
