Quality wine starts in the vineyard – and our ability to keep providing the quality wine you enjoy from Skinner Vineyards and Winery means a long term and sustained commitment to the health of our vines and soil.
We farm our vineyards sustainably and are committed to a process of continuous improvement in our grape growing practices, which includes protecting air and water quality, conserving water, promoting energy efficiency, reducing pesticide use and preserving ecosystems and animal habitat.
At all of Skinner’s vineyards, we measure soil moisture and take plant measurements every week to direct our irrigation program. We only apply water where and when it is needed.
Our cover crops are not simply a visual enhancement – this is a soil conservation measure that both improves soil health and provides habitat for beneficial insects.
All of our inputs to the vineyards have the least impact on the environment possible. We use weather data and field observations to direct our integrated pest management program. As to feeding our vines, we recycle the winery pomace as compost for use in the vineyards.
At Skinner, we believe that being good stewards of the environment plays a valuable role in the ultimate quality of our wine as well as the health of the ecosystem around us.
